Facts about whisky

The exact origin of whisky is unknown, it’s existence was first documented in Ireland in the early 1300s. The Red Book of Ossory, written at Kilkenny Cathedral, provides the first references to distillation and to Aqua Vitae, the water of life.

Here are some more facts about whisky.

Did you know that…

  • there are two spelling of whisky. In Scottish-English it is spelled ‘whisky‘ and in American-English and Irish-English it is spelled ‘whiskey‘.
  • the color of the whisky comes from the wooden barrels in which it has aged. The different type of woods give each whisky its distinctive color, smell and flavor. (The barrels made from American White Oak have been claimed to produce the tastiest whisky.
  • the United States, Canada, Ireland, Scotland and Japan are the five countries that produce the most whisky.
  • written evidence of malt distilling dates from 1494 and large commercial distilleries appeared in the 1770s, today’s whisky industry dates from the 1820s.
  • a closed bottle of whisky can be kept for more than 100 years and it will still be good to drink.
  • an opened bottle will remain good for 3 to 4 years.
  • March 27th is ‘International Whisky Day‘, celebrating Spring and of course whisky.
  • whisky stops maturing after is has been bottled.
  • age statements refer to the length of time that the whisky has been matured in the barrel.
  • the oldest whisky is a Mortlach 75-year-old. Distilled on November 17, 1939 and bottled in 2015 by Gordon & MacPhail. Just 100 decanters were produced. The price? Over GBP 20.000 / USD 28.000 / EUR 23.000.
